Basic necessities for a newborn

Young couples often say they will wait to have a baby until they can afford it. Unfortunately, unforeseen problems and unavoidable delays have a way of popping up and by the time they consider that they are ready, they are either too old, too set in their ways or too involved in their careers to start a family.

A new baby, for the first few months, has very few material needs. As long he has loving parents with a few basic necessities on hand, he will survive and thrive as well as any royal baby in the finest palace.

Here is a list of items new parents will need.

Clothing

* Five to ten sets of first size undershirts or underwear sets, so you won't have to do laundry every day.

* Cloth or disposable diapers. Newborns will need to be changed up to ten times daily. If you choose cloth diapers you will need diaper pins and about six pair of plastic pants to keep his bed dry.

* Five to seven pair of sleepers or nightgowns. Gowns make changing diapers much easier.

* Five to seven pair of bootees or socks to keep his feet warm.

* If it is winter, a warm sleeping bag in which to bring him home from the hospital.

* Two or three soothers, to keep the baby content, and the new parents less stressed.

Feeding

* If the mother is breast feeding, she will need to have a healthy diet and lots of rest.

* For bottle feeding, there should a month's supply of formula in stock.

* Ten burp cloths or bibs

* Eight baby bottles, tops and nipples.

* A bottle warmer

* A bottle brush and sterilizer.

Bedding

* A crib.

* Three to four fitted crib sheets.

* Five to seven lightweight blankets

* One or two heavier blankets or heavy sleepers if the weather is cold.

Bathing

* A plastic baby bathtub is handy, but not absolutely necessary.

* About five soft baby washcloths.

* Gentle baby bath soap, bar or liquid.

* Hooded baby towels are nice, but plain bath towels are quite adequate.

Miscellaneous

Diaper rash ointment

A digital thermometer

Baby nail clippers

A car seat to bring the baby home from the hospital.

There are many other items on the market which are nice to have, and which may make the parents' lives easier, but they are by no means necessities. Many will come by way of baby showers and gifts from friends and relatives when the baby arrives. The birth of a child is a cause for celebration and the resulting joy and excitement will radiate far and wide.

However, as far as your little prince or princess is concerned, he or she will do very well with just the basics listed above.
